ae4 coquina wall 147.jpg
A close up of the coquina walls that make up Castilllo de San Marcos. Coquina is a soft stone made of sand and shells, which was cut into blocks and mortared together to form the fort. Attackers found that cannon balls would stick in the soft coquina rather than shatter it.
